The territory of Rum (Rome, the Byzantine name for their empire), the region of Anatolia, was taken over by Seljuq armies after the defeat of the Byzantine army at Malazkert in 1071 AD. By the end of the 12th century they were in control of most of Asia Minor but were overrun by the Mongols in the 1240's.
